Three of a family jailed for torturing housewife in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, March 3, 2026 (BSS) - A court here today convicted a man and his parents on charges of torturing his wife over dowry demands, sentencing them to various terms in prison.

The convicted individuals were identified as Md Sohel Miah, 30, and his parents-Md Mahmud Ali, 53, and Mst Dhali Begum, 48-all from South Jhaudanga village in the Dewanganj upazila of the district.

According to the prosecution, Sohel married Mst Fahima Khatun, 21, daughter of Md Fazlul Haque, from Kolakanda village in the same upazila on November 22, 2019. Following the marriage, Sohel began torturing Fahima, demanding a dowry of Taka 3 lakh. When she was unable to meet the demand, the abuse escalated.

The most severe incident of torture occurred on November 17, 2022. After 15 days, Fahima's father, Fazlul Haque, learned of the abuse and immediately rescued his injured daughter from her in-laws' house. 

He filed a case with the Dewanganj Police Station, leading to an investigation and the submission of a charge sheet against the accused.

After hearing testimonies from nine witnesses and reviewing relevant evidence, Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of the Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 found the accused guilty and delivered the verdict. 

The court sentenced Md Sohel Miah to two years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a fine of Taka 20,000. His parents, Md Mahmud Ali and Mst Dhali Begum, were each sentenced to 1.5 years jail and a fine of Taka 10,000.

The public prosecutor, Advocate Md Fazlul Haque, confirmed the verdict, ensuring that justice had been served for the victim.
