RANGPUR, Feb 27, 2026 (BSS) – The beautiful flowering of litchi trees in a favorable climate has encouraged farmers and raised hopes of a bumper harvest of the juicy fruit in the Rangpur agricultural region this season.
Officials of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said some 85 to 90 percent of litchi trees in the orchards and homesteads on around 1,500 hectares of land in all five districts of the region have already bloomed as the process continues.
“The extraordinary flowering of litchi trees has raised hopes for a bountiful production of seasonal fruits for farmers this season,” said Additional Director of the DAE’s Rangpur region Krishibid Md Shirajul Islam.
After repeatedly getting bumper yields and excellent market prices, farmers are expanding litchi cultivation commercially every year as litchi cultivation has changed the fortunes of many of them in the region in the last 15 years.
With the help of DAE and adopting latest technologies and agronomic management, farmers are producing an average of 16,000 to 18,000 tonnes of litchi worth around Taka 150 to 200 crore every year in the region.
Talking to BSS, farmers said they are busy now with agronomic management in their litchi orchards to ensure better production of the fruit though the flowering process will continue till the middle of March in the region.
Litchi farmers Mokbul Hossain, Arman Ali, Mohibur Rahman, Mominul Haque, Amenur Rahman and Mukul; Hossain of different villages in Rangpur Sadar upazila expressed satisfaction over excellent flowering in their litchi trees.
Deputy Director of the Burirhat Horticulture Center of the DAE in Rangpur Dr Md Abu Sayem said marvelous blooming in litchi trees is predicting a bumper production of the fruit this season.
“Farmers are getting better output with lucrative markets prices from cultivating high yielding, hybrid and local varieties litchi like China-3, 'Bedana', Bombay, 'Muzaffarpuri', ‘Madrazi’ and 'Kanthali' in their orchards every year,” he said.
Litchi farming on a commercial basis has already become profitable creating a silent economic revolution in the agriculture sector bringing self-reliance to many farmers in all five districts of Rangpur agricultural region.
“A brighter prospect is prevailing to further expand litchi cultivation in the region,” Sayem said, and stressed on establishing fruit-processing industries to produce export quality products from litchi for exporting abroad to make its farming more profitable.
He also expressed satisfaction over excellent budding in litchi trees and predicted a bumper production of the seasonal fruit this season.
Meanwhile, field level agriculture officials of the DAE are providing latest technologies and necessary assistance to farmers in taking extensive care of blooming litchi trees and pest management to get bumper production of the fruit.
