KURIGRAM, Feb 26, 2026 (BSS) - Char areas in Kurigram district have turned green this season with extensive crop production. Around 250 chars have emerged in the beds of the Dharla, Baromasia, and Neelkomol rivers, transforming previously barren riverbeds into fertile farmland.
Farmers are cultivating Boro paddy, maize, tobacco, and groundnuts, creating a lush green landscape across the char lands.
A field visit to Fulbari Upazila revealed that these chars have been used for crop cultivation for the past 10 to 15 years, sustaining the livelihoods of local farmers. This season, farmers expect to harvest 25 to 28 maunds of Boro paddy per bigha.
Fulbari Upazila Agriculture Officer Nilufa Yasmin told BSS that the upazila's target for Boro cultivation this season was 10,205 hectares, of which 10,050 hectares have already been cultivated. Maize has been grown on 2,265 hectares, including 1,250 hectares on riverbeds, while tobacco cultivation covers four hectares. She expressed hope that favorable weather would lead to a bumper harvest.
The emergence of chars and successful crop production is being welcomed by locals as a new opportunity for agriculture and livelihood in Kurigram.
