SYLHET, Feb 14, 2026 (BSS) - The Member of Parliament (MP)-elect from Sylhet-3 constituency Mohammad Abdul Malek today said that the area would be developed like a museum with beauty and tourism facilities.
Abdul Malek popularly known as MA Malek has been elected by a large margin from the constituency comprising Dakshin Surma, Balaganj and Fenchuganj in Thursday's election.
He is also the immediate past president of the UK branch of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and an adviser to the party Chairperson.
According to the results, MA Malek secured 1,15,450 votes. His nearest rival, Musleh Uddin, from Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis under the 11-party alliance received 75,674 votes.
In his reaction to BSS here on Friday morning after the announcement of the results, M A Malek expressed gratitude to almighty Allah. "I am too much excited. It feels like I am in a dream. The way the public has responded is unimaginable. Behind this success, there were my party's support and also the party symbol, the sheaf of paddy. Madam Khaleda Zia earlier asked me to serve the people after returning to the country. Our party's Chairman Tarique Rahman and the Secretary General gave me the party symbol. That is why people voted for me. I want to dedicate myself to serving the people of the area."
He said people believe that BNP will form the government and Tarique Rahman will become the Prime Minister. "I have been with Tarique Rahman for the last 19 years. People voted with the hope that I will be able to bring development to the area."
Describing himself as a builder of Dakshin Surma, Fenchuganj and Balaganj, he said, "I will continue to work as a builder. In five years, InshaAllah, this region will become a tourism-rich area like Malaysia. That is my dream."
He outlined his plans to improve the roads in Dakshin Surma, enhance technical education, develop the health sector and take special initiatives for women's development. He said development will be ensured with accountability and transparency.
MA Malek is known as a close associate of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on 5 August in 2024, he returned to the country and became active in local politics. He came back to Bangladesh on 17 October after 19 years abroad. Earlier, on 27 April 2021, his village home was attacked and set on fire after he spoke against the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while living overseas.
He had frequently made statements against Sheikh Hasina and the Awami League from abroad, which drew attention both within and outside the party. Following the political change, he contested the election and was elected to the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) with the love and support of the people of his area.
