BAGERHAT, Jan 17, 2026 (BSS) - A prayer and memorial meeting was held here in the district today seeking forgiveness for the departed soul of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia.
The program was organized by the District Microbus, Jeep and Ambulance (Hire) Workers Union. Alongside prayers for the late leader, special supplications were offered for the good health and long life of members of the Zia family, including current BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, as well as for the restoration of democracy in the country.
The memorial meeting was presided over by Mahbubur Rahman Ujjal, president of the district Microbus, Jeep and Ambulance (Hire) Workers Union. BNP-nominated candidate for the Bagerhat Sadar-2 constituency, Barrister Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain, attended virtually as the chief guest.
Among those who spoke at the meeting were Bagerhat district BNP convener Engineer ATM Akram Hossain Talim, joint convener Khadem Niyamul Nasir Alap, municipal BNP president Sheikh Shahed Ali Robi, district BNP member Hadiuzzaman Hero, and former district Chhatra Dal general secretary Ali Saddam Dwip.
Speakers described Begum Khaleda Zia as a symbol of democracy in Bangladesh, stating that throughout her life she led an uncompromising struggle to restore people's voting rights and democratic governance. They noted that as a successful three-time prime minister, she made lasting contributions to the country's development, independence, and sovereignty, and that under her visionary leadership, the BNP continues to hold a strong place in the hearts of the people as a popular political force.
