CHAPAINAWABGANJ, Jan 6, 2026 (BSS) - As winter intensifies across the country, the number of diarrhea patients is rising in the district. Health authorities reported that 69 people were infected with diarrhea in the district over the last 24 hours, alongside an increase in other cold-related illnesses.
Dense fog and cold winds have disrupted daily life, affecting people, livestock, birds, and crops. Hospitals in Chapainawabganj are experiencing growing pressure as patients of all ages-especially children-are being admitted with pneumonia, fever, cold-cough, respiratory problems and diarrhea.
According to the Civil Surgeon's Office, 45 of the newly infected diarrhea patients were admitted to the 250-bed Chapainawabganj District Hospital. Others are receiving treatment at different upazila health complexes: three at Shibganj, eight at Gomostapur, five at Nachol and eight at Bholahat.
Hospital records show that 61 patients were previously admitted with diarrhea. In the last 24 hours, 45 new patients were admitted, while 61 recovered patients were discharged. At present, 45 diarrhea patients are undergoing treatment at the district hospital.
Guardians expressed concern as children are increasingly affected. Jahanara Begum, a relative of a patient at the district hospital, said her sister developed respiratory complications due to the cold and had to be hospitalized as her condition worsened.
Rozina Begum, a guardian from Nachol upazila, said her child was admitted with diarrhea caused by excessive cold. She said that many children suffering from cold-related diseases were being treated at the hospital.
Hospital authorities confirmed that sufficient stocks of saline and essential medicines are available to handle the situation. Doctors have advised people to remain cautious, drink safe water, maintain proper hygiene and take preventive measures to protect themselves from winter-related illnesses.
