CHUADANGA, Jan 6, 2026 (BSS) - A moderate cold wave swept over the district on Tuesday as the temperature dropped sharply, intensifying winter hardships across the district.
The lowest temperature of the season was recorded at 7.5 degrees Celsius at 9:00 am, according to the Chuadanga Meteorological Office.
The temperature fell by nearly two degrees within a day. While a mild cold wave prevailed on Monday, it intensified into a moderate cold wave on Tuesday. Dense fog, cold winds and a cloudy sky have made the cold more severe, with the sun remaining absent for the past three days.
Mist falling like light rain and heavy fog have significantly reduced visibility, disrupting normal life. Public movement on roads has declined noticeably as residents struggle to cope with the biting cold. On Monday, many people were seen burning straw on roadsides to keep warm.
The cold spell has particularly affected the poor and homeless, increasing their suffering. Health officials reported a rise in cold-related illnesses across the district. At Chuadanga Sadar Hospital alone, 130 children and elderly patients have been admitted to the diarrhoea ward. Similar cases are being reported at upazila health complexes.
Officer-in-Charge of the district Meteorological Office, Jaminur Rahman, said the temperature recorded on Tuesday morning was the lowest of the season. He added that the cold conditions may persist for the next two days, while dense fog is likely to continue reducing visibility.
Local authorities have urged people, especially children and the elderly, to take precautions against the severe cold.
