Nomination of Jamaat candidate, 16 others cancelled in Ctg

CHATTOGRAM, Jan 4, 2026 (BSS) - The nomination papers of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Dr. AKM Fazlul Haque in the Chattogram-9 constituency have been cancelled due to unclear information about dual citizenship and failure to submit required documents. 

Additionally, a total of 16 candidates had their nominations cancelled in various constituencies in Chattogram, including 2 in Chattogram-8, 4 in Chattogram-9, 5 in Chattogram-10, 2 in Chattogram-13, 2 in Chattogram-14, and 1 in Chattogram-16.

Returning officers confirmed this information today after scrutinizing the nomination papers. 

The nomination of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) candidate Abdul Momen Chowdhury was canceled because he did not sign the affidavit or submit his income tax return. Independent candidate Milan Sharma's candidacy was also cancelled because none of the 10 verified voters in the dual selection process were found to be genuine. 

Furthermore, Nagorik Oikya's Md. Nurul Abshar's nomination was canceled for non-compliance with the education certificate in his affidavit, loan default from Bangladesh Bank, and bill default from the City Corporation.
The Election Commission has canceled the nomination papers of two candidates in the Chattogram-13 (Anowara-Karnaphuli) parliamentary constituency after verification and selection. 

The disqualified candidates are BNP leader Ali Abbas and Gana Odhikar Parishad candidate Md. Mujibur Rahman. The Returning Officer and Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia stated that Ali Abbas, who claimed to be a BNP candidate, did not have a nomination paper submitted by his party. 

Similarly, Gana Odhikar Parishad candidate Md. Mujibur Rahman's nomination paper was canceled due to a loan default. In the Chattogram -8 (Boalkhali-Chandgaon) constituency, the nomination papers of CPB candidate Md. Sehab Uddin and independent candidate Md. Azad Chowdhury have also been canceled.

Md. Sehab Uddin of the Bangladesh Communist Party had his nomination cancelled due to an unacceptable signature specimen. Md. Azad Chowdhury's nomination as an independent candidate was not supported by 1 percent of voters. 

In Chattogram-10 (Double Mooring-Pahartoli) constituency, the candidatures of 5 individuals were cancelled. Independent candidates Md. Arman Ali and Md. Omar Yusuf Khan had their candidatures cancelled as the correctness of 1 percent of voters was not verified. Jatiya Party candidate Md. Emdad Hossain Chowdhury's nomination was cancelled due to an improperly filled Form 21. 

Bangladesh Labor Party candidate Md. Osman Gani's nomination was cancelled as the security deposit was made in the wrong code. Md. Ali Osman of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis had his nomination cancelled for not signing the affidavit.

In Chattogram-14 (Chandanaish) constituency, the nominations of independent candidates Mohammad Mizanul Haque Chowdhury and Md. Nurul Anwar were cancelled as none of the verified voters were found to be authentic. In Chattogram-16 (Baanshkhali) constituency, Md. Ariful Haque's nomination as a candidate of the People's Rights Council was cancelled for not signing the original affidavit and undertaking. 

These candidates have the option to appeal to the Election Commission, according to the returning officers.
