JHENAIDAH, Jan 4, 2026 (BSS) - Two people were killed after a goods-laden truck plunged into the Kumar river in Shailkupa upazila of the district early Sunday.

The deceased were identified as truck driver Sohel Sheikh and Mubarak Hossain. Both hailed from Gajamanikunda village under Pabna Sadar upazila.

The accident occurred around 1.00 am in Baradah Old Bridge area near Garaganj Bazar on the Kushtia-Jhenaidah highway. 

According to police and local sources, the truck, carrying pulses, was traveling from Jashore to Pabna when it lost control upon reaching the bridge, broke through the railing, and fell into the river.

Following the incident, two units of the Shailkupa and Jhenaidah Fire Service rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies of the deceased around 8:00 am.

Mrityunjoy Biswas, in-charge of Jhenaidah Arappur Highway Police, confirmed the incident and said further investigation into the cause of the accident is underway.
