SUNAMGANJ, Jan 3, 2026 (BSS) - The Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner of Sunamganj Mohammad Ilias Mia announced today that the nomination papers of 26 candidates for the five parliamentary constituencies in Sunamganj have been declared valid, while 13 others have been rejected.
A total of 39 candidates had submitted nomination papers for these seats.
The candidates whose nominations were rejected have the option to appeal, the Returning Officer added. Among the 13 cancelled nominations, seven were from political parties and six were independent candidates.
In Sunamganj-1 constituency (Dharmapasha, Tahirpur, Jamalganj, Madhyanagar), six candidates filed nominations. Two were rejected: Maulana Muzammil Haque Talukder of Bangladesh Nezam-e-Islam Party and Haji Mukhlesur Rahman of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, for failing to submit required income tax documents.
Validated candidates include - BNP’s Anisul Haque and Kamruzzaman Kamrul, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Tofail Ahmed, and Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s Md. Rafiqul Islam.
In Sunamganj-2 (Dirai-Shalla), seven nominations were submitted. Independent candidate Ritesh Ranjan Deb was rejected due to a signature mismatch. Valid nominations went to BNP’s Md. Nasir Chowdhury and Tahir Raihan Chowdhury, Mohammad Shishir Monir of Jamaat-e-Islami, Niranjan Das of the Communist Party of Bangladesh, Md. Sakhawat Hossain of Khelafat Majlis, and Shoaib Ahmed of Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam Bangladesh.
Sunamganj-3 (Jagannathpur-Shantiganj) saw nine nominations, with four being rejected: Syed Talha Alam of Amar Bangladesh Party (AB) due to income tax arrears, independent candidate Mahmud Ali for proposer signature irregularities, and Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Khaled and Hussain Ahmed for voter list signature irregularities.
Validated candidates are - Mohammad Koyshar Ahmed of BNP, Md. Yasin Khan, Mohammad Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury and Sheikh Mushtaq Ahmed of Khelafat Majlis, and independent Md. Anwar Hossain.
In Sunamganj-4 (Sadar-Bishwambharpur), nine candidates submitted nominations and three were rejected. They include - Md. Amirul Islam of Khelafat Majlis (missing signature), Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Khaled of Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) (no asset declaration), and independent Mohammad Abidul Haque (voter list irregularity).
Valid nominations went to BNP’s Nurul Islam, Md. Shams Uddin of Jamaat-e-Islami, independent Dewan Zainul Zakerin, Nazmul Huda of Jatiya Party, Shahidul Islam of Islami Andolan Bangladesh and Mohammad Azizul Haque of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis.
In Sunamganj-5 (Sadar-Bishwambharpur), eight candidates filed nominations and three were rejected: Mohammad Jahangir Alam of Jatiya Party (loan default), Mohammad Mushahid Ali Talukder of BNP (no party letter), and independent Md. Sirajul Islam (voter list discrepancy).
Valid candidates include BNP’s Kalim Uddin Ahmed, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Abu Tahir Muhammad Abdus Salam, independent Md. Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury, National People's Party (NPP) Md. Azizul Haque and Mohammad Abdul Qadir of Khelafat Majlis.
