BAGERHAT, Jan 3, 2026 (BSS) - The nominations of five candidates here in the district were cancelled following the scrutiny of nomination papers for the upcoming parliamentary elections, mainly due to loan defaults and information discrepancies.

A total of 32 candidates submitted nomination papers from four parliamentary constituencies in the district. After verification, the District Returning Officer declared five nominations invalid.

In Bagerhat-1 constituency, comprising Fakirhat, Mollahat and Chitalmari upazilas, 11 candidates filed nominations. Of them, the nominations of three candidates were cancelled. They are independent candidate SM Mushfiqur for discrepancies in voting-related information, Mujibur Rahman Shamim of Islami Andolan Bangladesh for being a loan defaulter and Golam Sarwar of Jatiya Party, also for loan default.

In Bagerhat-2 constituency, covering Bagerhat Sadar and Kachua upazilas, eight candidates submitted nominations. The nomination of Md Hasan Imam Litu of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) was cancelled due to loan default.

All seven candidates who filed nominations in Bagerhat-3 constituency, comprising Rampal and Mongla upazilas, were found eligible and their nominations were declared valid.

In Bagerhat-4 constituency, which includes Morrelganj and Sharankhola upazilas, the nomination of independent candidate Kazi Khairuzzaman Shipon was cancelled due to a mismatch in voter signatures.

Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Golam Md Baten said that the scrutiny process was conducted strictly in line with the Election Commission's laws and rules. He added that nominations were cancelled due to loan defaults and discrepancies in required voter information, particularly in the case of independent candidates.
