Slain freedom fighter Yogesh Chandra Roy given farewell with state honours

RANGPUR, Dec 8, 2025 (BSS) - Valiant freedom fighter Yogesh Chandra Roy, who was brutally murdered along with his wife Surbana Roy at their home in Taraganj upazila here on Saturday night, was bid farewell today with state honours.

After the autopsy, the bodies of Yogesh Chandra Roy, 75, and Surbana Roy, 60, were brought to their home in Rahimapur Khiyarpara village at 3:30 pm.

At 4:30 pm, Yogesh Chandra Roy was accorded a guard of honour at the Chakla crematorium, which he had donated to the village. Relatives and locals gathered in tears to pay their last respects.

Leaders of various political parties, freedom fighters, Taraganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Manabbar Hossain, and police officials were present during the ceremony. Following the guard of honour, the cremation was completed amid heartfelt grief from the family.

Shoven Chandra Roy, the eldest son of Yogesh Chandra Roy, filed a murder case with Taraganj Police Station on Sunday, accusing 10 to 15 unknown individuals. Police recovered the bloody bodies of Yogesh Chandra Roy and his wife from their house on Sunday morning.

According to family and local sources, Yogesh Chandra Roy was the headmaster of Uttar Rahimapur Nayahat Muktijoddha Government Primary School and retired in 2017. 

His elder son Shoven Chandra Roy serves in RAB in Joypurhat, while younger son Rajesh Khanna works in the Bangladesh Police in Dhaka. The couple had been living alone in the village.
