KHULNA, Sept 28, 2025 (BSS) – The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Sunday launched a water hyacinth removal programme in Khudia canal at Daulatpur–Aranghata area of Khulna city.

Student Affairs Secretary of BNP National Executive Committee Rokibul Islam Bokul inaugurated the campaign as chief guest.

Speaking at the event, Bokul alleged that the previous governments misused public funds in the name of canal dredging without carrying out necessary work.

“As a result, the canal was filled with silt, leading to flooding during the monsoon season,” he said.

Bokul pledged that if BNP is elected to power, the 10-kilometer-long Khudia canal will be fully dredged and restored for public use.

He added that culverts would be constructed for local residents on both sides of the canal, while adjacent roads would be rebuilt as part of a broader development plan.

He further noted that the present initiative—undertaken with the support of local residents—aims to reduce water logging, control mosquito breeding to prevent dengue, and protect the environment.

“Once boats and trawlers used to move through this canal which is now impossible,” Bokul said, “But as per people’s demand, the canal will be made usable again.”

Khulna City Unit BNP President Advocate S.M. Shafiqul Alam Mona, Organizing Secretary Sheikh Sadi, Daulatpur Thana BNP President Murshid Kamal, General Secretary Sheikh Imam Hossain, and leaders of BNP, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, and Jubo Dal, among others, were present at the event.
