PATUAKHALI, Sept 27, 2025 - (BSS) - Fishermen at the Alipur Fisheries Port
here caught a rare marine fish named "Black Diamond" or "Black Poa" today.

"Weighing 4.900 kilograms, the fish (Protonibea diacanthus) of the Sciaenidae
species was sold at about Taka 80,000 as the cost of Taka 16,000 per kg,"
World Fish Bangladesh Research Assistant Md Bakhtiar Uddin told BSS today.

Being informed, many people gathered here as this type of fish species is not
usually caught in the nets of fishermen, he said.

When the fish was brought to the shop 'Fresh Fish Kuakata' owned by PM Musa,
he bought it as he would prepare the fish for export, locals said.

Earlier, he bought another "Black Poa" weighing 4.5-kg at the cost of Taka
72,000 on Wednesday last.

This rare fish has high demand in the international market, especially since
the fish's air bladder is used in traditional Chinese medicine and cosmetics.

The length of this Black Poa, a rare marine fish, is usually 50 to 180
centimeters, but can sometimes be up to 1.5 meters long.

The fish is occasionally seen off the coast of Cox's Bazar, Maheshkhali, St.
Martin's, Patuakhali and Barisal in the Bay of Bengal.

They live on clay or sandy bottoms and survive by eating small fish, shrimp
and other crustaceans.

Kalapara Upazila Fisheries Officer Apu Saha said this fish is also called
black spotted croaker. Recently, two fish were caught in fishermen's nets.
