Teesta crosses danger mark in Rangpur

RANGPUR, Aug 13, 2025 (BSS) - The Teesta crossed its danger mark (DM) at Dalia point in Nilphamari of greater Rangpur district resulting in flash flood in the low-lying char areas due to onrushing water from upstream over the past 24 hours.

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) officials said that the intensity of monsoon rains has increased in the northeastern states of India and the higher parts of Bangladesh, creating a possibility of temporary flood situation in the Brahmaputra basin's low-lying areas.

"The Teesta was flowing above its danger mark by 5cm and 4cm at Dalia point in Nilphamari at 9am and 3 pm respectively today," Executive Engineer of the BWDB's Teesta Barrage Division Engineer Amitav Chowdhury told BSS at 5 pm.

Currently, all 44 gates of the Teesta Barrage Project are remaining open to control the huge water flow at Dalia point in Nilphamari where water levels of the river were still showing a little rising trend at 5:30 pm today.

Meanwhile, some low-lying char areas along the Teesta in Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat and Rangpur went under water amid torrential monsoon rains and onrush of water from upstream during the past 24 hours causing sufferings to locals.

"The temporary flood situation might fluctuate in the low-lying char areas of these three districts during the next couple of days," he said.

Talking to BSS, Additional Chief Engineer for Rangpur Zone of BWDB Engineer Dr Mohd Sarfaraz Banda said water levels of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna river system rose during the last 24 hours and might maintain the tendency during the next 72 hours.

"We are closely monitoring the situation and ready to take immediate steps, if necessary, to save flood control structures on an emergency basis anywhere in Rangpur division under BWDB's Rangpur Zone," he said.

Meanwhile, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of BWDB in a bulletin today said water levels of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers continued to rise over the past 24 hours ending at 9 am today.

Over the next 24 hours, water levels of these rivers may rise further, and the Teesta's water level may flow above the danger mark, while the Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers may exceed their respective danger marks.

"The low-lying areas along these rivers in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram may be inundated during the next 24 hours. However on the next second and third day, the water levels of these rivers may decrease," the bulletin said.
