KHULNA, June 26, 2025 (BSS) - The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed today in Khulna with the theme "Drug-Free Bangladesh," marked by various programmes including a rally, colorful procession and a discussion meeting.
The main discussion event was held at the conference room of the Deputy Commissioner's office, with Additional Divisional Commissioner (Revenue) Md. Feroz Shah attending as the chief guest.
In his speech, Feroz Shah described drug abuse as a serious social menace that must be eradicated.
He emphasized that the majority of illegal drugs enter Bangladesh through smuggling routes, calling for both institutional measures and community-level resistance to curb the menace.
He also highlighted how recent changes in the education system have left students more vulnerable to drug addiction and called for increased parental awareness and the promotion of sports to keep youth engaged in healthy activities.
Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saiful Islam presided over the discussion, which began with a welcome address by Md. Mizanur Rahman, deputy director of the Department of Narcotics Control in Khulna.
Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Anisuzzaman, Khulna University's Assistant Director of Student Affairs Prof Md. Mahadi Al Mudassir, Deputy Civil Surgeon Dr. Saikat Md. Rezwanul Haque and Additional Director of the Department of Narcotics Control (Khulna Division) Md. Ahsanur Rahman addressed the function as special guests.
Earlier in the day, a large rally and colorful procession were brought out from Shaheed Hadis Park, with enthusiastic participation from people of various professions.
