RAJSHAHI, June 5, 2025 (BSS) - Seasonal rawhide collectors representing 135 mosques, madrasas, orphanages, and boarding schools in Rajshahi will receive 263.3 metric tonnes of salt free of cost to process rawhide during Eid-ul-Azha.

The allocation, made by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, will be distributed across Rajshahi City Corporation and nine upazilas.

Deputy Commissioner Afia Akhter said upazila-based lists are finalized, and distribution will be completed before Eid. Upazila Nirbahi Officers have been tasked with supervising the process to prevent misuse.

"Rawhide collection is a major Eid-centric activity. In previous years, shortages of salt led to heavy losses.

This timely decision will help revive the sector," said DC Afia Akhter.

She confirmed salt procurement is complete and distribution is in its final stage.

Masudur Rahman, President of the Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said, "Salt price fluctuations hurt the leather industry. This government move will curb price hikes and break market monopolies."

He added that for the first 10 days of Eid, no rawhide will be allowed to leave the district, ensuring local collection, preservation, and phased marketing.

"This will reduce financial loss and revive the leather industry," Rahman said.
