"UNFPA-UNICEF contribution to reproductive health services commendable"

KURIGRAM, May 26, 2025 (BSS) - Additional Director General (Planning and 
Development) of the Directorate General of Health Services Professor Sheikh 
Sayidul Haque has said that the contribution of UNFPA and UNICEF in the field 
of reproductive health services is undoubtedly commendable.
 
He said this while inaugurating the three-day workshop on "District evidence-
based planning and budgeting (DEPB)' of the 'Health system strengthening for 
primary health care (HSS4PHC)' program in a function as the chief guest on 
Monday.
 
The Kurigram Civil Surgeon's Office is organising the workshop with the 
support of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the United Nations 
Children's Fund (UNICEF) at the Kurigram General Hospital conference room.
 
Civil Surgeon of Kurigram Dr Swapan Kumar Biswas presided over the inaugural 
function.
 
Superintendent of Kurigram General Hospital Dr Md Shahidullah, Deputy 
Director of the Kurigram Family Planning Department Md Modabber Hossain, 
Program Analyst of the UNFPA Bangladesh Md Shamsuzzaman and UNICEF Health 
Manager Dewan Mohammad Emdadul Haque were also present at the event.
 
Professor Sheikh Sayidul Haque said, "Such an evidence-based planning and 
budgeting workshop will play a crucial role in ensuring the quality of 
medical services in Kurigram district, which is lagging behind in the health 
sector." 
 
Addressing the field level officials of the Health and Family Planning 
Department, he said that the success of the workshop will be ensured by 
implementing the knowledge gained through field level training. 
 
He thanked UNFPA and UNICEF for the contribution of these two international 
organizations in the field of reproductive health services to improve 
maternal and child health services and reduce maternal and child mortality in 
the country.
 
In the first phase of the three-day workshop, field level officers of the 
Health and Family Planning Department of four upazilas of Kurigram district 
and concerned persons are participating. 
 
In the second phase, representatives of other upazilas of the district will 
participate in this workshop. 
 

Through this workshop, participants will receive training on effective 
strategies for evidence-based planning, budget formulation, and 
implementation of the district's health sector.
