RANGPUR, May 15, 2025 (BSS) - Police have arrested former Rangpur District Council member and Awami League (AL) leader Md Altaf Hossain in a murder attempt case filed in connection with the attacks on the July uprising procession in the city.
He had been in hiding for a long time to avoid arrest since the victory of the student-public uprising on August 5, 2024.
Rangpur Kotwali Metropolitan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Ataur Rahman confirmed the arrest to BSS on Thursday afternoon.
“Earlier, Altaf Hossain was arrested from Kamal Kachhna area of Rangpur city on Wednesday night,” the OC said.
Altaf Hossain is the son of late Farizal Islam of Najirdaho village in Haragachh union of Kawnia upazila and an active member of Kawnia upazila Awami League.
One Shah Alam Mia, who was seriously injured in the attacks by terrorists of the Awami League and its affiliates on the massive anti-discrimination student-people movement processions in Rangpur city on July 19 last year, filed an attempted murder case.
Altaf Hossain is an accused in that case filed on August 10, 2024.
“We arrested Altaf Hossain from his Amin Garden house in Kamal Kachhna Khan Patti Lane in the city on Wednesday night,” the OC said.
He was sent to jail after being produced before a Rangpur court this afternoon.
