RANGPUR, May 13, 2025 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced one person to life-term imprisonment, one to one-year and three others to six-months in prison for murdering housewife Saleha Begum of Gangachara upazila in the district five years ago.
Senior District and Sessions Judge of Rangpur Fazle Khoda Md Nazir announced the verdict in a crowded courtroom in the afternoon.
The prosecution says that a group of miscreants led by Md Bulbul of the village started beating one Saju Mia indiscriminately in Moubhasha Bamantari Char village under Gangachara model police station on March 9, 2018 in the afternoon.
At one stage, his mother Saleha Begum came forward to save her son when accused Bulbul hit Saleha on the head with a sharp knife, causing serious injuries.
Later, Saleha Begum's relatives admitted her to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on the same day.
In this regard, Saleha's husband Manjum Ali filed a murder case with the Gangachara model police station accusing eight people.
Following the investigation, the police submitted a charge sheet against seven accused in the court.
After examining 13 witnesses, the judge sentenced Md Bulbul, son of late Mozammel alias Mozam Sheikh to life-term imprisonment and an additional six months of imprisonment for non-payment of a fine of Taka 10,000.
In addition, accused Nurul Amin was sentenced to one year of imprisonment, and his wife Afroza Begum, and two brothers Nur Alam and Lal Mia were sentenced to six months imprisonment.
The court also acquitted three people from the case as the charges brought against them were not proven.
Public prosecutor of Rangpur Advocate Md Aftab Uddin stood for the satet while senior lawyer Advocate Abdul Haque Pramanik defended the accused side.
