RANGPUR, May 9, 2025 (BSS) - Literary and cultural figures have called for moving towards prosperity for social progress, inspired by the ideals of human welfare of Biswa Kobi Rabindranath Tagore.
They made these remarks at a special event organized by the Rangpur Sahitya-Sanskriti Parishad (RSSP) at its office in the city on Thursday night to celebrate the 164th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
To mark the day, RSSP organized programs such as discussion on Tagore's life, work, philosophy, literary works, social welfare and cultural activities, recitation of self-composed and Rabindranath's poems and performance of his songs.
President of RSSP Dr. Nasima Akhter presided over the function.
Distinguished educationist Professor Mohammad Shah Alam discussed "Rabindranath's 'Kanika'' poetry in terms of ethics", and RSSP joint secretary Md Tajul Islam, discussed "Communal harmony in Rabindranath's thoughts".
Poet and writer SM Amjad Hossain Sarkar, RSSP advisers Professor Atahar Ali Khan, freedom fighter Sushant Chandra Khan and Professor Abdus Sobhan discussed the life and works of Rabindranath.
Cultural personality Dr. Mofizul Islam Maantu led the Rabindra Sangeet group performance and also performed Rabindra Sangeet.
Radio and television musicians Tripti Dutta, Ishrat Jahan Kakon, Rowshan Ara Soheli, Swapan Kumar Pal, Sufi Zahid Hossain, Mallika Sharma, Dr. Samarpita Ghosh, Aminul Islam Harun, GS Bappan, Aradhya Aparajita also performed Rabindra Sangeet.
Literary and cultural personalities Narayan Chandra Barma, Sunil Sarkar, Mira Roy, Samima Akhtar Khanam, Purnima Raj, Mehedi Masud and Majedul Islam participated in the recitation of Rabindranath's poems.
Literary personalities Afzal Hossain and Anwarul Islam recited their self-composed poems dedicated to Tagore.
Sculptor Anik Reza and women activist Jennifer Ali Eli delivered welcome addresses.
Sunil Sarkar, Pushpajit Roy, and Dhrub Roy provided instrumental accompaniment.
RSSP adviser Advocate Masum Hasan, poets and writers Minar Basuniya, Hai Hafiz, Hasnain Rabbi and Abdul Quddus, journalist Firoz Chowdhury, RSSP life members Tapas Kumar Roy and Musician Deepak Kumar were also present.
The entire programme was moderated by RSSP general secretary Mamun Ur Rashid.
Later, the speakers discussed the life, human philosophy, literary works, poems, songs, novels, social welfare and cultural activities of Rabindranath Tagore, who took Bengali literature and culture to a new height in the world arena.
Professor Muhammad Shah Alam said that Rabindranath Tagore will forever be remembered for his unparalleled literary works in all relevant fields by enriching the Bengali language, culture, tradition and human philosophy.
In her closing speech, Dr. Nasima Akhter called on poets, writers and researchers, literary and cultural figures to follow Rabindranath's ideals to further enrich Bengali literature in building a non-communal, peaceful and developed society.
