Speakers stress need for child recreation to curb drug abuse

KHULNA, May 07, 2025 (BSS) - Emphasizing the importance of parental involvement, speakers at a discussion in Khulna urged families to actively engage children in sports and recreational activities as a preventive measure against drug abuse.

The discussion titled "Building a Drug-Free Society and Raising Awareness on Digital Addiction," was held at the Khulna PTI Auditorium today.

Department of Narcotics Control in Khulna and the Bir Muktijoddha Mobarak Ali Foundation jointly organized the event. 

Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Md Hossain Shawkat addressed the event as the chief guest, with Superintendent of the Primary Training Institute (PTI), Molla Farid Ahmed presiding over the session.

The programme was moderated by senior lawyer Advocate Sheikh Oliul Islam.

In his remarks, Md Hossain Shawkat said, "Today's children are the architects of tomorrow's nation. Just as an artist skillfully creates art, it is the combined role of parents and teachers to shape young minds with care and responsibility." 
He stressed the importance of providing children with proper guidance on the harmful effects of drugs and digital addiction.

Other speakers echoed similar concerns, noting that youth are increasingly vulnerable to drug and digital dependencies. 

They highlighted that encouraging positive engagements such as sports, cultural programs and religious teachings can help children avoid destructive behaviors.

Dr. Md Shafiqul Islam, deputy director of the Directorate of Primary Education Md Mizanur Rahman; deputy director of the Department of Narcotics Control, Khulna; assistant superintendent of PTI Mostafa Asaduzzaman; chairman of the Bir Muktijoddha Mobarak Ali Foundation Md Rakibuzzaman and World Vision senior manager Fuli Sarker among others, addressed the event.
