Collective efforts imperative for disaster mitigation

 RAJSHAHI, Oct 14, 2021 (BSS) - Speakers at a discussion unanimously
underscored the need for public awareness and modernised training to protect
life, livelihood and resources from disasters.

   It will not only save vulnerable people exposed to natural disasters in
various forms but also pave the way for sustainable development of the
country, the speakers added.

   They viewed the rate of disaster risks is gradually mounting due to
various natural and man-made calamities. So, there is no alternative to
collective efforts of all government and non-government organizations in this
regard.

   The District Administration and Department of Disaster Management jointly
organised the discussion at Rajshahi Women Government Polytechnic Institute
in observance of the International Day on Disaster Reduction -"Disaster
Management in Bangladesh" on Wednesday.

   A good number of government and non-government officials, political
leaders, NGO personalities, civil society members, city elites, journalists
and a large number of city dwellers joined the meeting.

   On the occasion, a documentary titled "50 Years of Disaster Management:
Bangabandhu to Sheikh Hasina" was screened highlighting the role of
Bangabandhu and Sheikh Hasina.

   In his address of welcome, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md
Aminul Haque gave an overview of the country's disaster situation and its
mitigation activities.

   Deputy Commissioner Abdul Jalil, Additional Deputy Commissioner Shariful
Haque, Assistant Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence Didarul Alam and
Principal of the polytechnic institute Omor Faruque addressed the discussion.

   In his remarks, Abdul Jalil said Bangladesh is now a model country in the
world in disaster management as it has been able to ease disaster risks
remarkably.

   Bangladesh has gained international recognition for its success in dealing
with disasters despite being one of the most disaster-prone countries in the
world.

   He also said the country has to increase the scope of disaster management
research to sustain achievements in dealing with natural and manmade
disasters.
