CHATTOGRAM, June 1, 2023 (BSS)-A Chattogram court here today sentenced a gold smuggler to 10 years imprisonment for his involvement in smuggling of gold nearly nine years back.
The court of the Chattogram Metropolitan Additional Sessions Judge and Special Tribunal-8 Shariful Alam Bhuiyan pronounced the verdict and fined TK 20,000 to Mohammad Hossain, 38, son of Ahmadur Rahman, hailed from Anwara upazila of the district, in default, he would have to suffer another one year imprisonment.
The prosecution story was in brief that Mohammad Hossain came to the Shah Amanat International Airport on a flight from Dubai in the morning of October 30, 2014.
Before leaving the airport, he declared that he did not have any dutiable goods.
After completing immigration formalities, while crossing the green channel, the customs officials at the airport searched his baggage and body and recovered 82 gold bars weighing 9 kgs 564 grams from his two cloth belts.
A case was filed with Patenga police station in this connection on that day.
Police submitted the charge-sheet against him on March 20, 2015 while the court framed charges against him on September 29 in the same year.
After examining a total of eight prosecution witnesses, out of 12, the court declared the verdict today in the absence of Mohammad Hossain.
