
RAJSHAHI, Dec 22, 2022 (BSS) - Holistic approach of communities and law enforcing agencies can be the best way of combating violent and countering extremism coupled with other social crimes.
Substantial and sustainable promotion of proactive community policing side by side with the effective role of guardians and teachers concerned is also important to protect the young generation from degradation.
High police officials and development activists made the observation while addressing the Community Policing Forum (CPF) Conference- 2022 at Shilpakala Academy auditorium in Rajshahi today.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) and Manob Kallyan Parishad (MKP) jointly organized the conference financially supported by the Asia Foundation (TAF) under the 'Police Engagement Approach for Countering Extremism (PEACE) in Bangladesh' project.
RMP Commissioner Abu Kalam Siddique addressed the meeting as chief guest, while Additional Commissioners Faruque Hossain, Bijoy Basak and Samsun Nahar and Superintendent of Police Masud Hossain spoke as special guests with TAF Director Sadat Sadruddin Shibly in the chair.
PEACE Project Coordinator Bashir Ahmed illustrated the countering violent extremism during his concept paper presentation. Large number of police officials, CPF members and others concerned joined the meeting.
Commissioner Abu Kalam Siddique said integrated efforts of police and people can curb anti-social activities, particularly drug-addiction, terrorism and militancy, everywhere in the society.
He puts emphasis on breaking down long standing barriers of mistrust between police and people and explores opportunities of community policing for ensuring citizens' safety through local initiatives.
Kalam Siddique said the community based policing had been introduced in the region with a noble view, but the community people should take the responsibility of making it effective.
Sadat Shibly told the meeting that the PEACE Project has been working to empower law enforcement agencies to carry out counter terrorism efforts that effectively engage citizens in awareness raising, information sharing and prevention initiatives.
