Two modern multipurpose public toilets to be built in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Dec 15, 2022 (BSS) - Two modern multipurpose public toilets are going to be built at two separate places in the city for welfare of the public in general, particularly the roaming people.

WaterAid Eco-Social Development Organisation (ESDO) will establish the toilets, one at Laxmipur crossing and another at Judges Court premises, in overall cooperation with Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC).

Designs of the proposed public toilets have already been finalized. WaterAid officials presented the designs before RCC Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton at his city bhaban office on Wednesday evening.

WaterAid Zonal Coordinator Rezaul Huda, Manager Zahidul Islam and Programme Officer Tanzil Hassan and RCC Chief Engineer Nur Islam were present on the occasion.

Earlier on August 10 last, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between RCC and WaterAid for implementation of the project.

The toilets will have various modern facilities, including separate arrangements for male and female, breast feeding corner, arrangements for people with special needs, rainwater harvesting and solar system.

With the WaterAid Bangladesh support, around 10,000 climate migrants will get clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene support in 10 slum areas of Rajshahi city.

To this end, 51 resilient and context-specific facilities will be installed and renovated besides installation and renovation of 28 community toilets.

Apart from this, 104 community people will be imparted caretaker training for operation and maintenance of the hardware.

A school sanitation complex has been installed at Shaheed Nazmul Haque Girls High School in the city recently aimed at habituating its students to lead a healthy life through using water, sanitation and menstrual hygiene management.

In the school sanitation complex, 10 toilets and two menstrual hygiene managements, including some other need-based amenities of sanitary pad, sanitizer and tissue, were set up.

There are sufficient lighting facilities for drying besides comfort fresh rooms for the girls in the complex. A drinking water station was installed for safe drinking water management in addition to establishing two hand washing stations.

Addressing the ceremony, Mayor Liton said concerted efforts of all concerned have become crucial to eradicate the urban poverty caused by the adverse impact of climate change as the climate-induced poverty has been escalating gradually in the urban areas.

Rural low-income people with their recurrent disaster exposures are migrating to urban areas. These newcomers face a serious employment crisis in the city.
