DHAKA, Sept 08, 2026 (BSS): Customs officials have detected 1,174 tonnes of slag in excess of the declared quantity on board a vessel at Harbaria-7 area of Mongla Port, demonstrating the customs authorities’ vigilance and capacity to verify the actual quantity of imported cargo.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) disclosed the information in a press release today.

According to the release, the vessel MV Anasa, carrying slag imported by Bashundhara Readymix and Construction Limited, arrived at Mongla Port on September 1.  The bill of lading declared 24,000 metric tonnes of slag on board.

Customs officials, along with the shipping agent and survey/marine engineers, initially conducted a light load survey. The survey found approximately 25,464.682 metric tonnes of cargo on the vessel.

Following objections from the importer and the parties concerned with the vessel, customs authorities took the initiative to conduct a joint re-survey.

The subsequent light draft survey finally found 25,174.724 metric tonnes of slag, resulting in the detection of 1,174  tonnes of cargo in excess of the declared quantity.

The NBR said the preliminary estimated potential revenue evasion against the excess cargo amounting to around TK 3,421,971.

The release said the difference between the declared and actual cargo quantities could be detected due to customs officials’ data-based analysis, vigilance and capacity to verify the actual quantity of imported goods.
