Japanese yen jumps more than 1% against dollar, extends rebound

TOKYO, Sept 3, 2026 (BSS/AFP) - The Japanese yen jumped more than one percent against the dollar on Thursday, a day after a similarly sharp rise fuelled speculation of an intervention in the foreign exchange market.

The unit strengthened to 158.12 per dollar by around 0700 GMT, compared with 159.91 earlier. The had been sitting at more than 160 Wednesday before a spike that fuelled talk of outside support.

The gains also came after a top Bank of Japan board member suggested officials could hike rates more than the expected 25 basis points at its next meeting this month, and even announce another at the following gathering meeting.
