NBR urges taxpayers to submit income tax returns by midnight today

DHAKA, March 31, 2026 (BSS) - The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has urged all individual taxpayers to submit their income tax returns for the 2025-2026 tax year by midnight today to avoid penalties and additional taxes.

According to an NBR press release issued today, online submission of income tax returns has been made mandatory for all individual taxpayers, with a few exceptions.

The release said that more than 5 million individual taxpayers have already registered in the NBR's e-Return system, while over 4.25 million taxpayers have submitted their returns online for the 2025-2026 tax year.

The deadline for submission of individual income tax returns has been extended until March 31, 2026. However, taxpayers may apply in writing for an extension until midnight today, and the concerned tax commissioner may approve an additional extension of up to 90 days.

To make the extension process easier, faster, transparent and convenient, NBR has introduced an online system through its e-Return platform. Taxpayers can apply for extension by logging into the e-Return system and using the "Time Extension" menu.

The NBR has specially requested all individual taxpayers to submit their returns within the deadline using the e-Return system to avoid penalties or additional tax burdens.

Those who are unable to submit their returns within the deadline can apply online for up to 90 days of extension by providing valid reasons before midnight today. Taxpayers who have not yet registered in the e-Return system can complete registration and apply for time extension.
