RANGPUR, March 25, 2026 (BSS) – People from all strata here observed the Genocide Day-2026 today with a renewed pledge to present the true history of the great liberation war to future generations.
To mark the day, the district administration organised a remembrance and discussion meeting on the Genocide Day and the great Liberation War at the city’s District Shilpokola Academy Auditorium on Wednesday.
Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Md Shahidul Islam was present as the chief guest at the programme presided over by Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Enamul Ahsan.
Addressing the event, the Divisional Commissioner said that the brutal genocide of March 25, 1971 accelerated the struggle for independence of the Bengali nation and the declaration of independence came the next day.
“This genocide was committed due to the ambitious attitude of some political leaders, political shortsightedness and lack of proper guidance. As a result, the country’s common people were subjected to discrimination, exploitation and oppression,” he said.
He said that independence was finally achieved through the united struggle and sacrifice of the entire people.
“It is the responsibility of all of us to present this chapter of history correctly to the future generations,” he said.
Regarding the democratic system, he said that the opinion and participation of the people are very important to maintain the beauty of democracy.
He sought everyone's cooperation to strengthen the democratic trend through an elected government and move the country forward.
In his speech, the Deputy Commissioner said that independence was achieved in 1971 through many sacrifices and bloody struggles. This is the ultimate manifestation of the united struggle of the nation.
“Now, it is the responsibility of all of us to protect the dignity of this independence and build an equal, non-communal, humane and developed Bangladesh,” he said.
As a citizen, he called on everyone to fulfill their responsibilities from their respective positions for the progress of the country and establishment of good governance everywhere.
Rangpur Range DIG Aminul Islam, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Majid Ali, Police Superintendent Md Marufat Hussaine and heroic freedom fighter Mohammad Abu Sattar spoke as special guests at the event.
Government officials, family members and relatives of freedom fighters and martyred and war-wounded freedom fighters, leaders of different political parties, people from different classes and professions and journalists were present at the event.
