DHAKA, Dec 30, 2025 (BSS) - More than 30 lakh taxpayers have filed their income tax return online so far during the ongoing tax year 2025–26, according to the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
Under a special order, the NBR has made online submission of income tax return mandatory for all individual taxpayers except senior citizens aged 65 years and above, physically challenged or persons with special needs, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, legal representatives submitting returns on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.
The e-return filing system for the tax year 2025–26 was formally inaugurated on August 4, 2025, by Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed through the website www.etaxnbr.gov.bd.
Since then, around 45 lakh taxpayers have registered in the e-return system, while more than 30 lakh have already submitted their returns online. Notably, even taxpayers for whom e-return filing is not mandatory are voluntarily submitting their returns through the online system, an NBR press release said here.
According to NBR data, 251,784 taxpayers filed e-returns in August 2025, 301,302 in September, 454,076 in October, 1,040,472 in November, and around 10 lakh taxpayers have filed returns so far in December.
In comparison, 1,002,298 taxpayers had submitted e-returns during the same period last year.
To facilitate the taxpayers, the government has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns until January 31, 2026. The NBR expressed optimism that more than 40 lakh taxpayers will submit e-returns within the extended deadline this year.
Although e-return filing is not mandatory for Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, they can still register in the system by emailing their passport number, national ID number and email address to [email protected].
Upon application, an OTP and registration link is sent to the applicant’s email, enabling overseas taxpayers to easily submit their income tax returns online. Authorized representatives are also allowed to submit returns on behalf of taxpayers this year.
The NBR stated that taxpayers can file returns without uploading any documents by entering accurate information on income, expenditure, assets and liabilities in the e-return system.
Tax payments can be made online from home using debit cards, credit cards, internet banking or mobile financial services such as bKash and Nagad. After submission, taxpayers can instantly download the acknowledgement slip and income tax certificate generated automatically by the system.
If any error is found in the submitted return, taxpayers can file a revised return through the e-return system within 180 days. So far, around 30,000 taxpayers have submitted revised returns for the 2025–26 tax year.
To make the e-return filing process more user-friendly, the NBR has provided training to taxpayers and their authorized representatives, including income tax lawyers, chartered accountants, cost and management accountants, and chartered secretaries.
For immediate assistance, taxpayers can contact the NBR’s dedicated call center at 09643-71-71-71. They can also submit written queries through the eTax Service option on www.etaxnbr.gov.bd.
In addition, e-return help desks set up at all tax offices across the country are providing services and advisory support during office hours.
The National Board of Revenue has also urged all individual taxpayers to submit their income tax returns for the 2025–26 tax year using the e-return system by January 31, 2026.
