Mahbubur Rahman, Secretary, Ministry of Commerce, noted that although Bangladesh has undertaken various initiatives to boost economic growth in recent years, the country's overall economy has not yet reached the desired level which leaves ample room for further improvement, said a press release today.
Acknowledging DCCI's research efforts, he said that through targeted studies and publications on issues such as 'Rules of Origin' and other trade-related matters, DCCI can play an even more proactive role in advancing the country's economy.
Dr. Zaidi Sattar, Chairman of PRI, stated that recent reports from various research institutions indicate an alarming rise in poverty levels in Bangladesh, which is a concern for the state of the overall economy.
He opined that expanding employment opportunities would help reverse this trend, adding that greater focus on export-oriented industrialization is essential in this regard.
Sattar also stressed the need for urgent reforms to existing trade and investment policies to expand Bangladesh's export opportunities in global markets. Expressing optimism, he said that the journal published by DCCI will contribute significantly to shaping future economic and business strategies of the country.
GM Abul Kalam Kaikobad, Member, NBR, said that the Tax Guide published by DCCI will further ease the online tax payment process for taxpayers at all levels.
He mentioned that nearly 2 million taxpayers have already used the online system to file their taxes and NBR expects that at least 5 million people will use this system in the current year. He expressed the hope that the online tax payment system will bring convenience to the public, reduce harassment and ensure transparency in the country's overall revenue administration.
In his welcome remarks, DCCI President Taskin Ahmed said that for the past four decades, Dhaka Chamber has been publishing the 'DCCI Tax Guide' to inform its members about changes in income tax, VAT, and customs laws.
He stressed the need to expand the tax net, ensure full automation of the revenue payment process, simplify and reform relevant tax policies to sustain the country's overall development growth and increase the Tax-GDP ratio.
DCCI has been consistently conducting data-driven research and preparing sector-specific recommendations for the advancement of the private sector and the overall economy, he added.
In continuation of this effort, DCCI published the second edition of the DCCI Journal of Business and Economic Policy which includes research papers on macroeconomics, skills development, international trade, LDC graduation, import-export management, fiscal and monetary policies, among other topics.
This publication may serve as a supportive guide for shaping future policy directions for both the government and the private sector.
