Philippine manufacturing output sustains growth in April

MANILA, June 8, 2023 (BSS/Xinhua) - The performance of manufacturing production in the Philippines sustained its growth in April, the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) said on Thursday.

Based on the preliminary results of a monthly survey, the PSA said that the year-on-year value of production index (VaPI) and the volume of production index (VoPI) increased by 10.7 percent and 8.2 percent in April, respectively.

The PSA said the April VaPI growth is faster than that in March at 6 percent, attributing the faster growth of the VaPI in April to the higher annual upturn in the manufacture of food products division at 19.7 percent from 10 percent in March.

Other main contributors were the faster annual increases in the manufacture of transport equipment at 35.8 percent and the manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products with an annual rate of 19.1 percent.

Of the remaining 19 industry divisions, the agency said eight exhibited annual increments during the period. Meanwhile, 11 industry divisions registered annual decreases during the month.

On the other hand, the PSA said the April VoPI growth is faster than that in March at 3.4 percent, attributing the faster growth to the same top three industry divisions which contributed to the increase in the yearly growth of VaPI during the period.

These were the manufacture of food products, 14.7 percent from 4.3 percent in the previous month, manufacture of transport equipment at 38.0 percent, and manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products at 15.7 percent.

The agency said six of the remaining 19 industry divisions exhibited annual increases during the period, and 13 industry divisions recorded annual decrements.
