Off-season bean farming brings bumper profits for Dinajpur farmers

DINAJPUR, Sept 30, 2025 (BSS) - Off-season cultivation of the improved Early-45 bean variety has brought remarkable success to farmers in Dinajpur, enabling them to earn high profits by supplying the vegetable to markets well ahead of the traditional season.

Deputy Director (Training and Crops) of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Md. Mostafizur Rahman, said that, encouraged by the agriculture department, farmers in all upazilas are now cultivating winter vegetable beans during the summer season on a commercial scale.

Md. Khademul Islam, 40, a farmer from Farakkabandh village in Birol upazila, cultivated the Early-45 bean variety on 30 decimals of land and achieved excellent yields.
"My land is filled with green beans. I'm getting both better yields and higher prices," he said.

Senior officials-including the Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Director General of Agricultural Monitoring and Evaluation, and other high-ranking officials-recently visited Khademul's field to observe the success firsthand.

Following the visit, Md. Afzal Hossain, Deputy Director and spokesperson of the Agriculture Department, said that Dinajpur has always had a strong agricultural record, and the successful production of summer beans marks another milestone.

"This Early-45 variety, developed by the Department of Agriculture, is toxin-free, rich in nutrients, and highly demanded in the market," he said. "The resulting high prices are significantly improving farmers' financial conditions and boosting interest in bean cultivation."

Md. Sayed Ali, 50, a farmer from Mokhlespur village in Birol upazila, cultivated beans on 35 decimals of land with support from the Sustainable Agriculture Development Farmers-Agriculturalists' Group. As of September 25, he had already sold produce worth Taka 27,000, with wholesale prices ranging between Taka 130 and 150 per kg and retail prices reaching up to Taka 200 per kg.

Inspired by Sayed Ali's success, other farmers in the village-Nazrul, Qayyum, Shahidul, Kartik Chandra, and Milan Dev-have also begun cultivating the Early-45 bean variety. Farmers stated that the variety offers high returns with relatively low investment.

The Early-45 variety yields an average of 7 to 8 tonnes per hectare and is particularly suited for planting in June and July.

Md. Rabiul Islam, 35, of Nashipur village in Dinajpur Sadar upazila, cultivated beans on 22 acres of land alongside his business.

"Due to favourable weather this season, I'm getting a pest-free, high yield," he said, expressing gratitude to Md. Yusuf Ali, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer of the Sadar Agriculture Department, for his guidance and support.

Abu Reza Md. Asaduzzaman, Director of the Sustainable Agriculture Development Project, emphasized the nutritional value of legumes like beans.
"These vegetables are rich in vitamin C, calcium, and carotene. We are regularly providing technical assistance and advice to farmers," he added.

With the safe, chemical-free cultivation of the Early-45 variety proving highly profitable, agriculture officials expressed optimism that more farmers will adopt off-season bean farming, which brings both environmental and economic benefits to the region.
