NATORE, April 28, 2025 (BSS) - A white revolution of garlic cultivation has
taken place in the district through its bumper yield in the current season as
the highest 30 percent of garlic of the country was produced in the district.

The estimated value of the garlic production in the district is around Taka
2,000 crore.

Farmers of the district have completed harvesting garlic from the land and
now they are busy in processing and preserving those in a proper way.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) said in the current season the
total cultivated area of garlic in 64 districts under 14 agricultural regions
of the country is 77,900 hectares while the total garlic production in the
country is 6,90,900 tonnes.

On the other hand, garlic has been cultivated on 22,855 hectares of land in
Natore, the highest 30 percent of the total cultivated land in the country.

A total of 2,15,000 tonnes of garlic have been produced in the district
during the current season and the farmers of the district are happy getting
bumper garlic output.

The DAE office said both-- the cultivated area and the production of garlic
in the district-- have increased gradually in recent years. In 2023, garlic
was cultivated on 16,745 hectares of land and produced 1,48,257 tonnes. The
following year, in 2024, 1,58,201 tonnes of garlic were produced from 18,005
hectares of land.

Although the target of garlic cultivation was set on 18,200 hectares of land
in the district during the current Rabi season, it was cultivated on 22,855
hectares of land exceeding the target.

Most of the garlic in the district is produced in Gurudaspur and Baraigram
upazilas. Of the 22,855 hectares of cultivated land in the district,
Baraigram upazila has the highest area of 8,993 hectares while 7,375 hectares
in Gurudaspur, 2,880 hectares in Natore Sadar and 1,100 hectares in Lalpur,
1,076 hectares in Bagatipara, 1,05 hectares in Singra and 426 hectares in
Naldanga upazila.

Garlic collection from the land has been completed in the district.

Garlic farmer Tofazzal Hossain of Tirail village in Baraigram upazila has
cultivated garlic on one bigha of land this season. He said that due to the
favorable weather prevailing at the beginning of the season, the germination
of garlic seeds was good. He got a yield of 30 maunds of garlic from his
land.

Hasanul Banna of Bajitpur area under the upazila got a yield of 31 maunds of
garlic from one bigha of land.

Boraigram Upazila Agriculture Officer Sharmin Sultana said the collection of
garlic from the land of the upazila has been completed.

Expressing satisfaction with the average yield of 31 maunds per bigha, She
said that the reason for the low production of garlic and the small size of
garlic in some cases could be due to repeated cultivation of garlic on the
same land and lack of organic fertilizer in the soil.

Deputy Director of the DAE Md. Habibul Islam Khan told BSS that with the
efforts of farmers and the advice and cooperation of the Agriculture
Department, there has been an expected production of garlic.

The Deputy Director expressed hope that the upward market price at the
beginning of the season will increase further in the future as the versatile
uses of garlic have increased, and farmers will benefit more by cultivating
the spicy crop.
