Farmers begin Boro cultivation in Jamalpur

JAMALPUR, Jan 8, 2023(BSS) - Farmers in the district have started Boro cultivation with a production target of 561,966 tonnes in the district this year.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said farmers have completed cultivation of Boro on 360 hectares of land till January 8. Boro cultivation is expected to increase this year due to favourable weather condition, they added.   

DAE Deputy Director Zakia Sultana said farmers prepared seed bed on 6,221 hectares of land which is 233 hectares more than the target.

“With a view to achieving the target we have already allotted fertilizer in Upazila level so that farmers can get the fertilizer in due time,” she said.

 The target of Boro paddy cultivation has been fixed on 129,630 hectares of land in this current Robi season in the district.

According to DAE, farmers will cultivate three varieties of Boro paddy - high-breed on 49,900 hectares with a production target 247,504 tonnes, high yielding variety on 79,500 hectares with a production target 314,025 tonnes and local variety on 230 hectares with a production target 437 tonnes.

The officials said 34,765 hectares of land with a production target 152,816 tonnes will be brought in Jamalpur Sadar Upazila while 18,620 hectares with a production target 77,688 tonnes in Sarishabari, 20,200 hectares with a production target 90,396 tonnes in Melandah, 16,900 hectares with a production target 70,236 tonnes in Islampur, 9,185 hectares with a production target 40,007 tonnes in Dewanganj, 16,610 hectares with a production target 69,698 tonnes in Madarganj and 13,350 hectares with a production target 61,125 tonnes in Bakshiganj.
