Boro rice procurement drive in full swing in Netrakona

NETRAKONA, Jun 15, 2021 (BSS) – Boro rice procurement drive is going on in full swing in Netrokona, which is well-known as paddy surplus district, creating a high expectation of ensuring the country’s food security amid Covid-19 pandemic situation.

District Food Controller’s office sources said under the countrywide Boro rice procurement drive programme, the government has set a target of procuring 43,738 metric tons of boiled rice and 3,743 metric tons of Atap rice from the enlisted automatic rice mills in the district during the period till August 16.

As part of the program, the district food department has enlisted 261 automatic rice mills for purchasing Boro rice from the mills. The concerned enlisted millers have already signed in contract papers of the food department for supplying Boro rice following government directives.

Meanwhile, the enlisted millers have started supplying Boro rice as per terms and conditions of the contract.

District controller of food department, Netrakona Mohammad Jakaria Mustafa told BSS here today that the district food department has, so far, procured 16,550 metric tons of boiled rice and 350 metric tons of Atap rice from the enlisted 261 millers through 13 purchasing centers opened in the government food warehouses of the district.

“The food department is procuring boiled rice at the rate of Taka 40 per kilogram and Atap rice at the rate of taka 39 per kilogram following the instruction of the government side by side of maintaining health guidelines amid novel Coronavirus pandemic situation “, he said.

Replying to a question, the DC food Jakaria Mustafa said, the rest of the amount of the targeted Boro rice are expected to be procured within the period of August 16.

“This year ,the farmers of the district have produced 7,51,784 metric tons of Boro rice by cultivating the crop on 1,80,013 hectors of land braving Covid-19 pandemic situation”, the deputy director of department of agriculture extension (DAE) FM Mubarak Ali told BSS.
