RAJSHAHI, Nov 25, 2020 (BSS)- A trial court here convicted a person and sentenced him to life imprisonment with labour for killing a girl in the district over 17 years back.
The convict has been identified as Shahidul Islam, 30, son of Iman Shah of Barkatpur Dharmahata village under Charghat upazila in Rajshahi district.
Senior District and Session Judge Meer Shafiqul Alam found the convict guilty of the murder charge and pronounced the verdict in his presence today. The court also fined him Taka 20,000 in default to suffer six months more behind the bar.
According to the prosecution story, in brief, is that the accused kidnapped and tortured Sajani Khatun, 6, daughter of Intajul Haque mercilessly as sequel to a previous enmity with her father on October 25, 2003.
She succumbed to her injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) after around two and half months of her struggling for life there.
Grandfather of the victim Afaz Uddin had lodged a case with Charghat Police Station. Upon completion of the investigation police pressed charges accusing Shahidul on April 2, 2008.
Before handing over the verdict the court examined recorded depositions of 11 prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidence.
Public Prosecutor Ibrahim Hossain conducted the case on behalf of the state while Advocate Mozammel Haque defended the accused.
