CHATTOGRAM, June 6, 2020 (BSS)- A corona unit facilitating 10 ICU beds and 60 general beds with central oxygen option was inaugurated at the newly constructed building of Chattogram Ma-o-Shisu Hospital today.
Awami League joint general secretary and Information Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud MP, inaugurated the corona unit via teleconference on Saturday as the chief guest.
Divisional Commissioner of Chattogram ABM Azad presided over the inaugural function while Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Jabed, Deputy Minister for Education Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, Senior Secretary of Home Ministry Mostafa Kamal Uddin, Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Md. Ilias Hossain and Divisional Health Director Dr Hasan Shahriar Kabir participated in the virtual inaugural function as special guests.
General Secretary of Chattogram Ma-o-Shisu Hospital Dr Anjuman Ara Begum, Vice-President Syed Mohammad Morshed Hossain and Treasurer Rezaul Karim Azad also addressed the inaugural function.
Dr Hasan said that Chattogram Ma-o-Shisu Hospital has set an example for others to come forward with helping hands in this moment of great calamity of the nation.
“Because, we also saw in today’s newspapers that husband died helplessly in front of his wife as he could not be admitted to the hospital. Such tragic events are highly undesirable,” he added.
Terming it is an inhumane task to return a patient from a hospital, Dr Hasan said those hospitals that are doing such deeds should refrain from doing inhumane acts.
The government is monitoring these activities closely and strict actions will be taken in time, he said.
Speaking as the special guest, Land Minister Saifuzzaman Chowdhury Jabed said “We are proud of Chattogram Ma-o-Shisu Hospital as they are working sincerely.”
He called upon the owners of private hospitals in Chattogram to come forward and help the people as much as possible.
He opined that everyone should help from his or her respective positions.
Speaking at the function Deputy Minister for Education Barrister Mahibul Hasan Chowdhury Nawfel said that the news of the local media with the headline ‘Chattogram wants to breathe oxygen’ has created more panic in the district.
“There were about 10 corona patients in our family, but the doctors did not tell us that we would need oxygen cylinders”, he mentioned.
Speaking at the inaugural function City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin said the Ma –o-Shisu Hospital has set an example by launching a 60-bed corona medical unit with 10 ICU beds.
He hoped that other private hospitals will also take similar initiative.
