Promoting mental health care stressed to prevent suicide

RANGPUR, Oct 10, 2019 (BSS) – Leaders of Bangladesh Psychological
Association (BPA) and psychiatrists at a human chain programme today laid
emphasis on social awareness to promote mental health care for preventing
suicide.

They made the observation at the programme organised by Rangpur regional
unit of BPA on the Press Club premises in observance of the World Mental
Health Day-2019 with the theme of ‘Suicide Prevention’ in the city.

Presided over by Rangpur regional unit President of BPA Moksedur Rahman
Arif, it’s General Secretary and psychiatrist Dr. Abdul Kalam Azad addressed
the programme as the keynote speaker.

Treasurers of the organisation Hasibur Rahman Badal and its Organising
Secretary Asad-Ud-Dowla Polash, Psychotherapists Shariful Islam, Suborna
Bose, Salam Sultana and Kripa Sindu Barman, Psychologist MA Ahad Shah, among
others, addressed the human chain.

Dr. Abdul Kalam Azad termed mental illness as one of the main reasons
behind committing suicide since most of the people who committed suicide were
found to be severely affected by mental disease.

Expressing concern over the increasing global rate of suicide, Dr. Azad
laid emphasis on creating awareness to make people aware of mental illness to
inspire them in taking proper treatment from specialists.

“The physicians, psychiatrists and psychologists should continue research
works and mass awareness should be created among the people through
highlighting different aspects of mental health to prevent suicide cases in
the society,” he added.

Psychotherapist Suborna Bose said that raising awareness on mental health
issues among common people and providing proper mental health care services
to them could play the most vital role in preventing suicide.

Moksedur Rahman urged all family members for cementing relations among them
and stand beside people with mental disorder for combating the trend of
suicide.
