Abahani, Uttara, Rupganj start win in DPL opener

DHAKA, March 8, 2019 (BSS) – Abahani Limited, Uttara Sporting Club and Legends of Rupganj won their opening round matches of the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League held on Friday at three separate venues in the city and its adjoining areas.

At Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium at Mirpur, it was an all-round performance came from Abahani Limited helped them to register a 60-run victory over Bangladesh Krira Shikkha Prothistan (BKSP).

Thanks to opener Jahurul Islam for his responsible unbeaten ton that helped Abahani to post a modest total of 216 for 9 from their stipulated 50 overs after they were forced to bat first by BKSP.

Wicket-keeper batsman Jahurul Islam composed magnificent 121 runs off 147 balls hitting 13 boundaries and one over boundary and during the process he shared an important 112 runs for the fifth wicket stand with Mohammad Saifuddin who chipped away 55 runs off 80 balls laced with six boundaries after Abahani slipped 4 for 53 inside 15.2 overs.

Skipper Mosaddesk Hossain (13) was the another batsman who was able to reach the double figure as Abahani lost wickets in regular intervals in the face of tight bowling attacks by the BKSP bowlers.

Abu Naser was the pick of BKSP’s bowlers as he claimed three Abahani’s wickets giving away 39 runs. He was well supported by Hasan Murad who bagged two wickets for 54 runs.

In reply, BKSP found the chase stiff and eventually dismissed at a paltry total of 156 in 40.5 overs.

BKSP suffered early batting jolt and could not recovered from their early damage losing wickets in regular intervals.

Skipper Abdul Kayium however offered some resistance in the middle with unbeaten 38 runs but he hardly got any support from the other end to stretch his innings as Abahani bowlers picked up wickets in regular intervals.

Opener Ratul Khan (37) and Shamim Hossain (18) were the other notable scorers for BKSP.

Nazmul Islam was the most successful bowler as he hauled three BKSP’s wickets conceding 30 runs while Sunzamul Islam captured two wickets for 41.

At Khan Shahed Osman Ali Stadium in Fatullah, Uttara Sporting Club beat Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club by nine runs.

Urrata Sporting Club, courtesy of two brilliant half centuries from Tanzid Hasan (64) and Sojib Hossain (61 n.o), scored a competitive total of 249 for 4 from their allotted 50 overs after they were put to bat first by Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club.

Tanbir Hayder of Sheikh Jamal took two wickets for 22 runs.

Chasing a winning target of 250 runs set by Uttara, Sheikh Jamal, despite a brave knock by skipper Nurul Hasan (65), fell shot as they were restricted at 240 for 9 in 50 overs.

However Nasir Hossain (48) and Fardden Hasan (39), Elias Sunny (28) and Ziaur Rahman (27) got off a good start but some tight bowling by the bowlers in the end denied Sheikh Jamal’s victory.

Abdur Rashid and Asaduzzaman Payel were the most successful bowlers as they shared six Sheikh Jamal’s wickets giving away 44 and 65 runs respectively.

Besides, Nahhid Hasan finished two wickets for 50 runs.

Abdur Rashid of Uttara Sporting Club was named the player of the match for his impressive bowling performance.

At the BKSP ground no 3 in Savar, Legends of Rupganj managed an exciting three-wicket victory over Brothers Union Club.

Asked to bat first by Rupganj, Brothers Union Club, rode on Yasir Ali’s responsible 65 runs knock, managed to score a moderate total of 220 for 8 from their stipulated 50 overs.

Muktar Ali and Nabil Samad shared four Brothers’ wickets conceding 38 and 41 runs respectively.

In reply, Rupganj reached to the coast for the loss of seven wickets with one ball to spare.

The two Rupganj openers made a good start contributing 67 runs for the opening stand before Brothers Union’s bowlers staged a fight back in the match picking up three quick wickets including two openers and skipper Naeem Islam in span of two runs.

However national discard Shahriar Nafees (59) and Asif Ahmed (38) took the responsibility to stop the rot putting 53 runs for the fourth wicket stand to take Rupganj to a comfortable position.

Later Indian recruit all-rounder Rishi Dhawan (22) and Jaker Ali (17) took Rupganj closer to the target safely.

Brothers Union’s Indian recruit pacer Chirag Jani was the most successful bowler as he grabbed three Rupganj wickets giving away 64 runs while Mohammad Sharif captured two wickets conceding 35 runs.

Shahriar Nafees of Rupganj was named the player of the match for his magnificent batting performance.
