UN commends Maldives for peaceful presidential polls

MALE, Sept 25, 2018 (BSS/XINHUA) – The United Nations on Tuesday commended
the authorities and political leaders in the Maldives for ensuring that last
Sunday’s Presidential Election had been peaceful and orderly.

In a statement, the United Nations also commended the Maldivian voters for
their commitment to democracy after opposition leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih
defeated incumbent President Abdulla Yameen in the presidential polls.

“We congratulate the Maldivian people for turning out in large numbers to
exercise their right to vote,” UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.

“We commend the authorities and political leaders for a smooth polling day
and for the commitment to a democratic Maldives,” the Spokesperson added.

According to provisional results released by the Elections Commission,
Solih had won the presidential elections after securing 58.3 percent votes.

Solih received 134,616 votes while President Yameen received 96,132 votes.

The new President elect will be sworn in on November 17.
