Rehabilitate people with permanent disabilities stressed

RAJSHAHI, Sept 20, 2018 (BSS)-Experts at a discussion here unequivocally
called for collective efforts of all government and non-government entities
concerned to rehabilitate the people with permanent disabilities.

They identically mentioned that rehabilitation of amputees who lost their
hand or leg in any causality could be possible if they were provided with
assistive devises along with imparting training on how to use artificial
limbs in their day to day life effectively.

They made this observation while addressing a workshop styled “Advocacy
for International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics” at Afsar Hussain
Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) in Rajshahi city
Wednesday.

Afsar Hussain CRP organized the workshop to mark the inauguration of its
Orthotics and Prosthetics Department.

On the occasion, two patients who have gotten prosthetics from CRP shared
their experience and expressed how better their life is now than before after
getting the prosthetics.

Deputy commissioner of Rajshahi SM Abdul Kader and principal of Barind
Medical College and Hospital Professor BK Dam addressed the workshop as chief
and special guests respectively with executive director of CRP Shafiq-ul-
Islam in the chair.

Associate Professor Dr Sujon Al Hasan from Department of Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation of Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital, retired deputy
director of Department of Social Services Muzammel Haque, Executive
Magistrate Sharmin Akter and center manager of Afsar Hussain CRP Suma Begum
also spoke.

Disseminating his expertise on the issue, Dr Sujon Al Hasan told the
meeting that three out of 100 babies in the world are born as cerebral palsy
who might get the power of normal movement through proper treatment.

He said a number of people every year lose their hand and leg due to
various accidents.

He also said that professionals of the country face various problems to
treat cerebral palsy patients. Rehabilitation of any disable people is one of
their mandates despite victims’ age and gender, he added.

Shafiq-ul-Islam said CRP is the first organisation in Bangladesh to
provide academic opportunities in the field of prosthetics and orthotics,
providing artificial limbs to the disabled patients.
