Death penalty for killing wife in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Sept 20, 2018 (BSS) – A man has been convicted and sentenced
to death on charge of killing his wife at Bagmara Upazila in the district
about four years back.

The convicted Abdul Kuddus, 30, son of Meher Ali of hailed Saidhara
village under the same upazila.

Judge of Special Tribunal against Women and Children Repression Nilufar
Sultana found him guilty of the murder charge beyond doubt and pronounced the
verdict in presence of him in the dock on Wednesday.

Three other accused of the case were acquitted as the murder charge
brought against them could not be proved.

According to the prosecution story, in brief, is that the accused Abdul
Kuddus had been demanding dowry worth Taka 60,000 from his wife’s parents.
Failing to get the money he started repression and oppression against his
wife. As continuation of the repression he strangulated his wife Shamima
Akhter to death on November 4, 2014.

Father of the victim Akkas Ali had lodged a case with Bagmara Police
Station on the same day. After the investigation police pressed charges
accusing four persons including Abdul Kuddus. The tribunal examined recorded
depositions of the prosecution witnesses and other relevant evidences and
handed down the verdict.

Special Public Prosecutor Ismat Ara conducted the case on behalf of the
state while Advocate Bazley Towhid Al Hassan defended the accused.
