Bangladesh Mission in Delhi observes National Mourning Day

NEW DELHI, August 15, 2018 (BSS) – Bangladesh High Commission in New
Delhi today paid glowing tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh
Mujibur Rahman marking the 43rd anniversary of his martyrdom.

In observance of the day, the mission also paid homage to Bangamata
Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, their three sons – Sheikh Kamal, Sheikh Jamal and
10-year-old Sheikh Russel – and other family members who were killed on Aug.
15, 1975 at his official residence in Dhanmondi, according to a message
received here.

Officers, staff and their family members joined High Commissioner Syed
Muazzem Ali in placing flower petals at a portrait of Bangabandhu at the
mission’s Maitree Hall.

The High Commissioner earlier hoisted the national flag at half mast,
followed by observance of one-minute silence.

National Mourning Day messages from President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister
Sheikh Hasina, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali and State Minister for Foreign
Affairs Md Shahriar Alam were read out by officers of the mission.

A special prayer seeking divine blessings for Bangabandhu and other
martyrs of the 15th August massacre was offered.

A highlight of the day’s observance was a panel discussion on
“Bangabandhu’s Vision for Peace, Stability and Development in the South Asian
Region and Beyond”.

Moderated by Deputy High Commissioner Rokeb-ul-Haque, the discussion was
participated by panelists Prof SD Muni from Jawaharlal Nehru University;
Venkat Narayan, President of Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia; and
Dr Kavita Sharma, President of South Asian University.

The panelists praised the able leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
in rapid economic development of Bangladesh. Bangabandhu would have been
proud of what has been achieved under the leadership of his daughter, they
said.

The speakers said Bangabandhu’s vision was to build a South Asia of
peace, stability and development.

In his concluding remarks, Syed Muazzem said Bangladesh and India have
reached a golden era in their relationships. The foundation of these
relations was laid by Bangabandhu, he added.

The programme was wrapped up by screening of a documentary titled, ‘Those
Golden Days featuring the life and achievements of Bangabandhu’.

With support from the High Commission, New Delhi’s prestigious India Empire
magazine brought out a special edition with cover page – Remembering
Bangabandhu.

Indian Express, a mass circulation English daily, carried an article on
Bangabandhu written by High Commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali.
