TIB for improving good governance in foreign-funded NGOs

DHAKA, Aug 02, 2018 (BSS) – Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has suggested amending the discriminatory and ambiguous sections of the ‘Foreign Donations (Voluntary Activities) Regulation Law 2016’ and finalization of the rules and regulations to ensure good governance in NGOs run by foreign finance.

TIB came up with the suggestion while releasing a research report on ‘NGO sector run by foreign financing; Challenges of good governance and way out’ at a press conference here today.

TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, its senior programme manager of the research and policy section SM Jewel, deputy programme manager Nihar Ranjan Roy and Md Mostafa Kamal and assistant manager Nazmul Huda Mina spoke at the press conference.

The report focused on a total of 48 local, national and international NGOs.

The report said NGOs run by foreign finance have made progress in ensuring good governance. There are some positive practices regarding ensuring internal accountability and control, it added.

Iftekharuzzaman said there is still scope to improve the situation, especially in the area of policy application.

Accountable relations between the board of directors and management will have to be strengthened, he said, adding that there is scope for NGOs to take more steps in maintaining transparency and integrity in recruitment, purchase and payment of salary-allowances.

TIB suggested involving local people and beneficiaries in welfare-oriented projects of foreign funded NGOs.
