Increasing fruit production stressed for healthier nation

RANGPUR, July 26, 2018 (BSS) – Increasing production and consumption of
the local, high yielding and hybrid varieties of fruits would help the rural
people to meet nutrition and attain self-reliance on way to build a healthier
and developed nation.

Member of the Parliament from Rangpur-2 constituency Abu Kalam Md Ahsanul
Haque Chowdhury Deuk expressed the opinion in the inaugural ceremony of a
three-day Fruit Tree Fair-2018 in Badarganj upazila town on Wednesday
afternoon as the chief guest.

The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) jointly with Badarganj
upazila administration have been jointly organising the fair on Badarganj
upazila parishad premises.

With Badarganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Agriculturist Mahbubar Rahman
in the chair, Badarganj upazila Vice-chairmen Saidul Islam and Rubina Akhter
addressed the function as the special guests.

Upazila level officials of the DAE, different agriculture related
departments and organisations and NGOs, private sector nursery owners,
students, youths, farmers, local elite and common people were present.

The government departments, non-government organisations and nursery
owners have set up twenty stalls displaying many indigenous species and
varieties of fruits, saplings of fruit trees and some fruit-bearing trees on
the fair ground.

In his welcome speech, Agriculturist Mahbubar Rahman the huge prospect of
expanding cultivation of fruits and the successes already achieved by many
farmers and common people of the upazila in enhancing fruit production to
attain self-reliance.

“The DAE with other agriculture organisations are imparting training to the
farmers and commoners on the latest technologies under an integrated approach
to enhance output of indigenous, high yielding and hybrid varieties of
fruits,” he said.

The chief guest called upon agriculture scientists and researchers to
innovate more varieties of quick-growing, hybrid and high-priced fruits
aiming at enhancing production round the year to meet nutrition and achieve
self-reliance.
