Massive Jute cultivation begins in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI, April 23, 2021 (BSS)- Massive jute cultivation has started in all six upazilas of the district with a hope of growing more jute, the important cash crop of Bangladesh.

According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), a total of 3,740 hectares of land has been brought under the jute cultivation in all the upazilas here during the current season.

Of the total land, 440 hectares will be cultivated in Narsingdi sadar upazila, 160 hectares in Palash upazila, 510 hectares in Shibpur upazila, 620 hectares in Belabo upazila, 690 hectares in Monohardi upazila and 1,320 hectares in Raipura upazila.

The government has given the maximum priority to increase jute production as to establish back the glory of the golden fiber.

The DAE official sources said cultivation of jute is increasing every year in the district while farmers have been showing more interest to cultivate it as they were getting fair price of their products last year.

Besides, the DAE has provided all necessary imputes including quality seed, fertilizer and insecticides to the farmers in proper time.

Farmer Abul Hasam of Belabo upazila, Abdul Maruaf of Rapipura upazila and Niranjan Roy of Monohardi upazila said they are interested in cultivating Tosha variety of jute on their lands as its demand and prices are more high in the local markets than the other varieties.

They said cultivation of jute is profitable and its sticks are also used for different household purposes like fire wood, fencing etc.
