Experts for double digit growth to be developed country

DHAKA, July 18, 2018 (BSS) – Experts at a discussion here today said Bangladesh needs a double-digit per capita income growth in next 21 years to become a developed one by 2041

“Bangladesh has set a vision of becoming a developed economy by 2041. This will call for a double-digit per capita income growth for one generation (over a period of next 21 years starting from 2021) to realize the vision 2041,” Distinguished Fellow of CPD Professor Mustafizur Rahman said told the discussion at CIRDAP auditorium.

The Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (Cirdap) arranged the technical session of a two-day programme marking the 39th founding anniversary of the regional development organisation.

Rahman said if Bangladesh achieves 10 percent per capita per annum income growth, its current Gross National Income (GNI) can be increased 8 times in 21 years which can help realise the Vision 2041.

Former governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Salehuddin Ahmed moderated the session while Bangabandhu Academy for Poverty Alleviation and Rural Development (BAPARD) Director General (DG) Dr Sheikh M Moniruzzaman, former chairman of Dhaka University Development Studies Department Professor Abu Eusuf and Professor of Jahangirnagar University Urban and Regional Planning Department Dr M Shafiq-ur Rahman spoke, among others.

In his keynote, Mustafizur Rahman recommended overcoming technological frontier in agriculture, diversifying rural economy, translating ‘Comparative Advantages’ into ‘Competitive Advantages’ to attain the vision.
