Construction works to protect govt establishments is progressing fast in Khulna

KHULNA, Jan 19, 2021 (BSS) – Construction works for protecting government establishments from the erosion of the river Bhairab and Rupsha in Khulna is progressing fast, said an official of the Water Development Board (WDB).

“A total of 92.50 percent work of the construction has already been completed. We are expecting to complete the work in schedule time by next June,” he said.

The Water Development Board under the Ministry of Water Resources is
implementing the works with a cost of Taka 29.96 crore, the official added.
According to the WDB, the government has taken the project in 2018 to protect all important government establishments from the erosion of river
Bhairab and Rupsha.

The construction works began in October, 2018 after the approval of the Executive Committee of National Economic Council (ECNEC) involving Taka 29 crore 95 lakh and 96 thousand, the WDB official said.

Earlier, the WDB sent a Draft Project Proposal (DPP) to the Ministry concerned describing many government establishments, situated near the banks of river Rupsha and Bhairab, are near to destruction due to the river erosion.

The establishments including important infrastructures of Mongla port Authority (MPA) will be destroyed side by side Ruzvelt Jetty will be damaged if the erosion of the rivers to be
continued.
The government establishments like Khulna MPA office, Residences of Khulna divisional commissioner, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Khulna Range, District Judge and Police Super near to be threatened to closure ruins.

Talking to BSS, acting executive engineer of WDB (South-West Zone) Palash Kumar Banarjee said Khulna WDB has taken the project while river erosion turned serious in 2018, saying the government establishments are probably going to ruin into the rivers.
